With our home and, more importantly, our heart in the Heights, we naturally love everything about this area. One of our favorite pockets of the Heights though is Sunset Heights, the northern portion of the Greater Heights area. We can’t get enough of Sunset Heights, and are so proud to share everything there is to love!
The neighborhood, which is bounded by I-610 (the loop) to the North, Airline Dr. to the East, 20th Street to the South, and Yale St. to the West, has all of the signature Heights amenities, yet some singular advantages of its own. We previously shared 10 of our favorite reasons for loving Sunset Heights now and in the future, but today we just want to focus on a few of the neighborhood’s delicious eateries. You’ll find great food options throughout the Heights, but Sunset Heights has some of our personal favorites. Below are can’t miss spots every foodie should check out when in the neighborhood.
- Airline Farmers Market/Canino Produce: This farmers market can go toe to toe with any other one in the city. And, unlike most of its competition, it’s open daily. Canino Produce’s market on Airline spans over 20,000 square feet and behind it sits a massive parking lot full of individual vendors. Quality Texas produce at great prices is the name of the game at this market, which has been around since 1958. Out of season produce can be found here too, although it’s less likely to be homegrown. And no trip to Canino’s is complete without stopping by the legendary Taqueria Tacambaro food truck parked in the back.
- Teotihuacan: When driving down Airline it’s hard not to notice Teotihuacan and its pink, mural adorned facade. That’s a good thing, because you’ll be kicking yourself if you miss out on the mouthwatering Tex-Mex that lies inside. Their green salsa and handmade tortillas alone will have you coming back, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. From enchiladas to fajitas to seafood, we bet you’ll have a hard time finding something you don’t like.
- Mam’s Snoballs: With the Houston heat and humidity on the rise and no relief in sight, it’s prime sno-cone season. And Sunset Heights has one of the best places to grab these tasty and refreshing treats: Mam’s Snoballs. Mam’s serves authentic New Orleans style snoballs, which are known for having softer, fluffier ice than traditional sno-cones. Their wide selection of flavors ranges from classic ones like cherry and watermelon, to New Orleans inspired ones like King Cake and Cajun red hot. If you’re feeling frisky, you can even toss some whipped cream or a scoop of ice cream on top of your snoball.
- Jus’ Mac: It may be called Jus’ Mac, but this Sunset Heights favorite along Yale delivers mac and cheese that is anything but just mac. Yes, the restaurant’s foundation is macaroni and cheese dishes, but their bold macaroni and cheese choices are unlike any mac and cheese you’ve ever experienced. Take the Chili Cheese for example, which is the perfect marriage of mac and cheese and a Frito pie. For those feeling less adventurous, their menu includes a “Conservative Mac and Cheese” section as well as other non mac and cheese options such as sandwiches and salads.
- 365 by Whole Foods Market: This one hasn’t hit Sunset Heights just yet, but we are eagerly awaiting the arrival of this 365, because it’s sure to be a game changer once it gets here. Whole Foods’ new 365 concept is a chain of smaller grocery stores with lower prices said to be targeting millennial shoppers. The stores are named after Whole Foods’ “365” house brand which will be featured heavily in the stores, but national brand name products will also be available. This grocery store, which will be the first of its kind in all of Texas, will be located at Yale and the loop.
