Staying ready!
If you plan to stay home during any future hurricanes or weather emergencies, keeping items stocked and ready is a necessity. Be sure to check the “Hurricane Stash” frequently to assure adequate supplies in case of emergency. The majority of these items have been previously mentioned in our hurricane season shopping list so all you need to do is gather these items together and check back every once in a while to make sure you’re ready. In addition, keeping everything in one area will help immensely when trying to locate things as you need them!
The Essentials:
- Water (one gallon, per person per day, 7 days)
- Flashlight- extra batteries
- Weather radio/regular radio- tune in to KUHF 88.7 FM or KTRH 740 AM
- Non-perishable food
- Manual can opener
- Toilet paper
- Plastics tarps (emergency roof repair)
- Handy tools and duct tape
- First aid kit
- Fire extinguisher
- Unique family needs (formula, diapers, prescriptions)
- Garbage bags
- Soap
- Disinfectant
- Rain gear, boots, jacket, umbrella
- Important family documents in a sealed portable waterproof container
- Paper plates, cups, utensils
- Candles
- Matches in a waterproof container
Below are some useful items to have if you own a pet, whether you plan to stay or evacuate in the case of an emergency.
- Transport carriers
- Leashes/collars (id tags)
- Pet food (a weeks worth)
- Drinking water (gallon per pet per day, 7 days)
- Food bowls
- Documents (vaccination records), in waterproof bag
- Pet medications (if applicable)
- Current photos of pets (in case pets get lost)
