During the storm: Staying safe
Preparing for the storm to hit can be tedious, but it will all pay off if the storm does hit. Below are helpful tips to keep in mind to help assure your safety during a hurricane.
- Monitor the TV or radio for emergency instruction.
- Frequently check supplies (hurricane stash).
- Stay away from windows, doors, and openings.
- Do not exit your home or go outside during the “eye” of the hurricane.
- Try not to use any electric appliances.
- Stay alert of lightning and try not to shower until the storm has ended.
After the storm: Reporting damages and working toward repairs
Whether your home was damaged by the storm or not, there are some things you’ll need to keep in mind after the storm is over. Here’s a helpful list of things to remember to do after the hurricane has passed.
- Stay indoors until local officials say it is safe.
- Contact family and friends.
- Contact police or utility companies to report if anything is damaged and hazardous.
- Avoid flood water completely, on foot or in a vehicle.
- Photograph any damage on your property.
- If you have roof damage, secure a tarp on top to avoid further damage.
